Coming of Age

The Unitarian Universalist Pacific Central District's Biennial Coming Of Age Retreat Program for Youth Entering 8th-10th Grades

Mission Statement
To provide retreat experiences for youth that will further the purpose of the Coming of Age Programs of our individual congregations. The purpose of the retreats and of the Coming of Age Programs of which they are a part is to help our youth integrate their childhood into their emerging adulthood, with a clear sense of themselves and their place in the church and in the world.

Participating Congregation's Responsibility

  • Provide a structured program for its participants, which will be in addition to the three structured weekends. This should include some sort of mentoring with an adult in the congregation, and activities around service, knowledge of the congregation and Unitarian Universalism, and personal spiritual growth and exploration.
  • Provide recognition to those participants completing the program in a regular Sunday morning worship service.
  • Provide adult support to serve on the retreat sub-committee to implement one of the weekend events; however, if the assistance includes supervision of the weekend, it may not be a parent.
  • Each congregation provides a list of registrants, participant's fee and adults participating. Congregations can raise money through their budget, fundraising or fees.
  • Notify a member of the Coming of Age Task Force if there are any problems with the program.

Parents Responsibility

  • Commit to full support of program and support for youth participation
  • Provide transportation to and from events as necessary
  • Provide a willing ear to their youth participant, but recognize the youth's right to privacy within the program
  • Notify their minister, religious educator, or a member of the Coming of Age Task Force if there are any problems with the program

Youth Participants' Responsibility

  • Attend each event, both the district events and any scheduled by their own congregation
  • Notify someone if an emergency makes his or her attendance impossible
  • Take the program seriously and accept full responsibility for your own participation
  • Notify their minister, religious educator, or a member of the Coming of Age Task Force if there are any problems with the program

Blessed are those who speak their minds in meetings, who can take and give criticism; who keep alive their sense of humor.
